The Batavians' struggle for liberty was used in the 17th century as an emblem for Dutch liberation from Spanish rule. In 1597 the northern provinces seceded from the empire of the Spanish Habsburgs.

About. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers visitors an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. This international collection, which is now state-owned, was originally private, the result of the exquisite taste of its two main creators, Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1875-1947) and his son, Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1921-2002).
